The Two Measurements You Actually Need

How to Measure Non-Standard Bag Shapes

Arched or Curved Top Windows

Many ita bags have a decorative arch at the top of the display window. For these, measure two dimensions: the width at the widest point and the height from the bottom edge to the highest point of the arch. When cutting your insert, cut the arch shape slightly smaller than the window — a 2mm gap at the top won't be visible but will prevent the insert from pushing against the curved window.

Circular or Oval Windows

Measure the diameter (circular) or long and short axes (oval). For cutting, a compass is useful for marking circular cuts. Alternatively, trace the window onto paper by placing the bag face-down on a copier and making a photocopy — then use the printout as your template.

Windows with Center Dividers

A few bags have a vertical or horizontal divider bar across the display window. Measure each section separately. You'll need two pieces of foam rather than one. Cut them individually so they fit around the divider without force.

Foam Thickness vs Display Depth: The Math

Choosing the right foam thickness requires one simple calculation:

Available thickness = Internal depth − 5mm clearance

The 5mm clearance accounts for the window panel thickness (~1–2mm) and the space needed for pin backs to extend behind the foam without pressing against the bag's back panel.

Example: Your bag has a 2.5cm (25mm) internal depth.

• Subtract 5mm clearance → 20mm available
• Subtract window panel thickness → ~18mm
• Maximum practical foam thickness: 8–10mm
• Recommended thickness: 6mm (leaves ample room for pin backs)

If you exceed the maximum foam thickness, the window won't close, or it will bulge. A bulging window stresses the PVC/TPU material and causes premature yellowing and cracking.
